Oh Grammar Where Art Thou?

I know I’m old every time I get on Social Media. It appears that grammar no longer matters when communicating with others. Yes! It bothers me and I want to correct every occurrence, but I remind myself that I was not elected grammar cop for the internet. While this page is dedicated to the improper use of grammar, I could write another page on improper spelling. The younger folks have developed a new language that ignores spelling and concentrates only on communicating. They know what they’re saying and many times we don’t. It’s like code!

Your or You’re?

Grammar

While many people use these two interchangeably they are very different words. Your indicates possession as in is this YOUR money that I found? You’re indicates that some action has occurred. You’re (YOU ARE) in trouble young man! I know what action followed that one when I was younger. Is it too much to ask that we not mix these words? Maybe so.

There, their, they’re now!

These are some of my favorites. Who knew English was such a difficult language for those who supposedly grew up speaking only English? Of course, I know it’s not their fault when they use there for they’re. They’re just trying to communicate the best way they know how. Maybe they could design an app to help folks know how to use correct grammar! OH WAIT…

There is really no excuse anymore for not using proper grammar. The new (fairly new) Grammarly App is a great tool to use BEFORE you publish anything. Especially if you are posting to you’re blog site. Or maybe your just texting in social media. (See what I did there?) I promise if you practice using correct grammar it will begin to come naturally and you will gain the trust of your audience as you appear more intelligent. So, there ya go!
